Yeah People won't be attracted to a new forum with no threads and conversations in it, they will be interested in a new type of forum if it is a topic they are interested in and they see lots of other people participating in it.

useful information. I agree to the number 3 tip: Admin should have sound knowledge of the topic, because how can the admin facilitate if he/she does not know what is the topic all about.

I think the point about chit-chatting being different from discussions is a good distinction.

For it to be a real community that will succeed, the conversations need to be related to the greater topic at hand. They need to add to the niche, and get new visitors to join so they can be part of those conversations that you won't find on another forum.

Try and find a niche that you understand and perservere by putting lots of content on it.
Don't think you can outsource making a forum sucessful!
