Long tail is the way to go. Choose a niche, build up some good content targeting the main keywords, and as you add up more and more content, you'll also get traffic from related 'long tail' keywords. Btw, read this blog post :

What is the Search Long Tail?

My periodic table contains only 1 element : the element of Surprise.

The long tail will produce much more targeted traffic. These keyword phrases are easy to place onto the first page of results, but they also have fewer people searching for them. I am a big fan of the longtail.

Short tail keywords could be competitive is fierce, and you need to have an authoritative well written, and well optimized site to rank well. On the other hand long tail might be searched for by very few people.
Long tail keywords brings only small traffic, but its less competitive so you can rank on the first page of Google for long tail keywords far easier than ranking for short tail keywords. Then the visitors searching for long tail keywords know exactly what they want, they convert amazingly well to sales and ad clicks.
