Default Visual Basic : Introduction and History

VB (Visual Basic) is a 3rd Generation programming language by Microsoft. It's procedural as well as event-driven. VB is derived from BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code). VBScript and VBA are the scripting languages which are similar to VB in their syntax.

Visual Basic offers Rapid Application Development (RAD) of rich Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications to be run on the Windows platform.

Version History :
  • Visual Basic 1.0 => May 1991
  • Visual Basic 2.0 => November 1992
  • Visual Basic 3.0 => 1993
  • Visual Basic 4.0 => August 1995
  • Visual Basic 5.0 => February 1997
  • Visual Basic 6.0 => Mid 1998

VB 6 is the final release in this VisualBasic series. Microsoft ended the support for it in February 2008. With Visual Basic .NET being the successor to VB6.

I have never been too fond of visual basic. I remember back in the days of Basic, which is different from visual basic, and the fun I had...

I prefer c++ for most cases now, but find myself using Java frequently as well.

Thanks for the info. Basic is actually my first programming language, and that was more than 20 years ago. I stop using basic for decades.
