You can either use Notepad++ (really simple interface, fast loading)
or PHP Developer 2007 (it's a good PHP IDE)

Anyway, Dreamweaver isn't too complicated.
Turn off excessive toolbars and switch over to the Code view.

This way, it will be easy for you to edit your codes.
(The code highlighting feature of DW really helps)

Well, to be frank, I dislike WYSIWYG site editors.
(design view of DW included)

I prefer to write "codes" myself. Rather than let any application write it for me.
It's much better that way!

If you are new to coding and this stuff,
then you should learn (x)HTML/CSS and the basics of PHP.

Some good tutorial sites are :
XHTML Tutorial , PHP For the Absolute Beginner , PHP Tutorial - Introduction .

Hope you find it useful.

Can anybody tell me what that means? I get it on the front page of my site.

Yes. Just learning the basics of PHP (+ the syntax overall) will do him a lot good.
